Brooklyn (2015) / Gabrielle Aplin – Home

Ellis: “You’ll feel so homesick that you’ll want to die, and there’s nothing you can do about it apart from endure it. But you will, and it won’t kill you. And one day, the sun will come out you might not even notice straight away – it’ll be that faint. And then you’ll catch yourself thinking about something or someone who has no connection with the past. Someone who’s only yours. And you’ll realize that this is where your life is.” – Brooklyn (2015)

Brooklyn is one of those films where the trailer plays in the cinema and you say “that’s nice”, but life would slip by for months, till you find yourself on a long-haul flight or eating supper alone at home on a Friday night, when you finally press play. And 2 hours later you’d sink into bed wiping that last tear and questioning your bad decisions to pick a sentimental Victorian novel at such hours.

Based on Colm Tóibín’s 2009 novel “Brooklyn”, Director John Crowley tells the story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant from a working family circa 1950. She’s bright, open and industrious, but there’s not much meaningful opportunity for her in her small Irish town. So with the help of a priest, she eventually heads to Brooklyn alone. Through her struggles, she falls for an Italian plumber (Emory Cohen), but faces temptation from another man (Domhnall Gleeson) when she returns to her homeland for a visit.

This movie is a true work of filmmaking; being able to capture ordinary stories about people with extraordinary capacity. Immaculate cinematography and a massive performance by one of my favourite actresses Saoirse Ronan (pronounced sere-sha) who also starred in Grand Budapest Hotel.

It’s about the cast, the details, the struggles. The way girls talked about bathing suits in the 1950s, or how one’s tragedy may not always be death or poverty, but falling in love with two good men.

Gabrielle Aplin – Home

“Home”

I’m a phoenix in the water
A fish that’s learned to fly
And I’ve always been a daughter
But feathers are meant for the sky
And so I’m wishing, wishing further,
For the excitement to arrive
It’s just I’d rather be causing the chaos
Than laying at the sharp end of this knife

With every small disaster
I’ll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real

‘Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It’s not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?
Home home home home

So when I’m ready to be bolder,
And my cuts have healed with time
Comfort will rest on my shoulder
And I’ll bury my future behind
I’ll always keep you with me
You’ll be always on my mind
But there’s a shining in the shadows
I’ll never know unless I try

With every small disaster
I’ll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real

‘Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It’s not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?
Home home home home home home home home

‘Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you’re alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It’s not just where you lay your head
It’s not just where you make your bed
As long as we’re together, does it matter where we go?
